Rethinking Fashion: Design Responsibility

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 @ Parsons The New School for Design

Panelists:
Massimiliano Bizzi - President, WHITE Group
Giusy Bettoni - Founder & CEO, C.L.A.S.S.

Moderator:
(I took his Eco-Fashion &Under-Armour Project classes whilst attending Parsons last year.)

Great panel. My favorite notes are all about how sustainability isn't meant to stand out in it's own way (ie: as "crunchy granola"), but to end-up being out there because people love the design, and oh yeah, it just happens to be good (or at least, better) for the planet. Transparency is the next big step for most companies (Nau, Patagonia, Timberland, etc... are leading the way). Consumers want to be connected to a purpose and honesty - so sustainability cannot be stopped! It just doesn't need to be pointed to as the reason to buy from a line, rather, it's almost a "bonus." And closed loop really is happening already and more to come. That's exciting! Really good stuff from brilliant minds. Thanks James & Parsons!

Parsons Fashion Design Basic Supply List & NYC Shop List

Sew ;)…you’re starting Parsons Fashion Design this Fall?  EXCITING!  I graduated from the AAS program in May.  I am almost a bit jealous of all of you starting this week - I loved meeting everyone and learning from such amazing professors...but, this is about you, not me, so here goes:

Your teachers will tell you the specifics when you get to class, but I wanted to share my basic supply list.  Over the semesters, I’ve learned that these things will get me through my construction classes!

Basic Supplies:
- Measuring Tape
- L-Square metal ruler
- Variform Hip Curve metal ruler
- 18” x 2” clear plastic ruler
- 6” x 1” clear plastic ruler
- French Curve (and/or Vary Form Curve Rule – metal – Parsons Professor Luz Pascal designed the first version of these!  She's amazing, by the way!)
- Paper Scissors
- Fabric Scissors (you will want a really nice sharp pair!)
- Embroidery scissors or thread snips (small scissors for when you are sitting at the sewing machine/serger)
- Size 10-13 hand-sewing/embroidering needles
- Pins (probably #17 satin steel, or dressmaker pins – just buy the box, you’ll use them!)
- Push Pins
- Wrist pin cushion (you could make one!  Just put a button on under your fabric “pillow” to protect your wrist from long needles & pins!)
- Thread (get white, black, and a color of your choice in 100% cotton)
- Muslin (your teachers will tell you what weight to get depending on the project)
- Pattern Paper (has 1” dots and markers all over it and comes in rolls by the yard.  This is actually called “Marker Paper” in the real fashion world, because it allows you to lay out the pattern and see how much fabric you need for each full pattern.)
- Manilla “Sloper” Paper (like manilla files, but a little thicker and usually green on the other side – often come in huge rolls like fabric)
- Red/Blue Pencil
- Chalk
- Pencils & Pens!

I still think that you should go to class before purchasing, as teachers may request a specific type of muslin, ruler, pattern-paper, pencil, etc…but it’s good to know what you might be carrying around and the size of bag you may need!

There are tons of great stores in the Garment Center, but for these basics I would head (between 7th & 8th Avenues) to Sil (257 W. 38th Street), Panda (247 W. 38th Street), and/or Steinlauf & Stoller (239 W. 39th Street).  Elegant Fabrics (222 W. 40th Street) is a great place for swatching (about 2” x 3” pieces of fabric), but they are really over-priced to actually buy fabric from.  They also sell pattern paper (and give students a 10% discount – really convenient since it is NEXT DOOR to 232 W. 40th Street!).  At 208 W. 40th Street is “Style Fabrics” (though at this time, they don’t have a name plaque anywhere, so just look for the number 208), and they have great prices for being so close to school and carry some good knits.

Good luck & Happy Shopping!

AAS Fashion Design Program Overview

Ciao all!

I work part-time as a Social Media Assistant for Parsons and here are some answers to a lot of questions that newly accepted students have been asking me!

AAS Fashion Design Program Overview:
Technically 65 total credits (curriculum here), but anybody with a BA will transfer 21 liberal arts credits and anyone with certain art classes in their first degree may be able to transfer 31 (and can therefore be “Fast Track” if they so chose).  For students needing to take all 65 credits, it will take them four semesters (two years).  Students needing 44 credits can do it in 3 semesters.  And students needing 34 credits can do Fast Track which is one crazy year, or chose to spread it to 3 or even 4 semesters (there are tons of amazing classes to take).  Courses are 2 hours and 40 minutes, one day per week with the exception of Construction 2, which is two class periods per week for a total of 5 hours and 20 minutes per week (usually right in a row, but can be two separate days if taken in the evening).

There are three Construction 1 classes: Sewing, Draping, and Pattern-Making.  I recommend taking them in that order if you are part-time (or all in your first semester if you are full-time).  You cannot take Construction 2 until these three classes are done.  (Fast Track students will take Construction 2 and 3 in the same semester - it's a lot to learn!)  The rest of the classes have some leeway, but I also recommend taking Drawing 1 and a computer CAD class (Photoshop or Illustrator) in your first semester, probably along with Process & Skills & Textile Survey or History.  If you can, take a Drawing class EVERY semester or at least do Mr. Ogawa’s workshop (he is definitely an amazing teacher) – he has a workshop once per week, then you will be ahead – drawing/illustrating fashion is most likely what you will be doing in a Fashion Design job.  Being able to do flats in Illustrator and fabric design in Photoshop will also be amazingly helpful and learning Photoshop so you can do Mood boards for any classes that require it will also be great throughout your time at Parsons and beyond!

There are, of course, tons of electives (and sometimes competitions) to chose from, so read all of those emails!  (I heard there were 15 coming-up for the next year!!!  Wow, I’m jealous!)  And definitely take your resume to Parsons Career Services ASAP to get the log-in information for College Central (but you need their log-in to get the Parsons-specific internships), where all internships are listed.  Sometimes an internship will last you just a week (leading up to and/or including Fashion Weeks), or will be for longer (like a semester or a year even, if you love it!).

Oh, and read everything you can now about FUSION (and Facebook) to find out if you are interested in applying.  It’s a great competition between Parsons and FIT every year, but it isn’t planned by Parsons Administration, so they don’t send out email reminders.  (I’m still bitter that I missed the deadline in the Fall!)  You illustrate a collection for the Fall deadline, are chosen in the Fall, and then design your collection (and make it) and have the runway show in the Spring.  It’s grueling, but an unbelievable opportunity.  This also means that you get to better compete with BFA students who make their entire thesis collections and get them photographed.  We do not make thesis collections in AAS, and don’t get the opportunity to have photographs taken (unless you do that on your own, which some students did), so our portfolios look entirely different from BFA.  I don’t necessarily see this as a disadvantage, because most fashion designers don’t actually make their collections, they just illustrate them!  (Most employers won’t care to see the photographs anyhow, just your illustrations – ie: can you get your ideas across, and can you use Photoshop & Illustrator?)

The electives I took were TAILORING (you just make one tailored jacket from Mr. Proscia’s patterns), but learn a lot of tailoring secrets and techniques), MERCHANDISING WORKSHOP (it was a competition for Under Armour), SHOE DESIGN (if you take the BFA class, like I did, you actually make a pair of shoes under the direction of Howard Davis.  Your first semester, you have to make flats, but if you take it again, you can make heels – wish I would have known that so I could have taken it twice!), ECO-FASHION: SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS (lots of information about eco-techniques and eco-designers – one of my favorite classes at Parsons and I heard Parsons will be incorporating a lot more eco-techniques in the near future, even starting in every construction class in the Fall), SILK-SCREEN PRINTING (really just for fun – loved it), TEXTILES (with David Leung – we learned manipulation techniques; dyeing, smocking, pleating, yo-yos, cording, etc… - I don’t know if it’s still around, but I loved it – it is not the same as Textiles Survey), & HAND EMBROIDERY & APPLIQUE BEADING (with Vashti Vertuil – just get it okayed with your advisor first so you get the credits!  I still use this class all the time and I took it before Construction 1 – Sewing and then aced that class after!)!  I hope that helps a little bit, but those are just a SMALL percentage of the electives offered!  I’ve heard great things about the Accessory Design classes, hand- & machine- knitting classes, Couture & Avant Garde Techniques classes, and many more.

Okay, that is a lot of information for one blog post, but let me know if you want to know more!

Yours truly,
Alex

Parsons BFA Fashion Design Thesis Collections on Bobbin Talk!

Ciao amici!

I am in the midst of finals, so forgive for the lack of posting, but I just wanted to point you in the direction of Parsons Professor Aneta Genova's blog Bobbin Talk.  At this time, every year, she posts images for the BFA Fashion Design Seniors' Thesis Collections.  I'm obsessed with checking it - you will love to see what these young designers have done!  (And the images are just beginning, so grab a coffee and a macaroon, get comfy, and get clicking!!!)

3 Finals Down, 6 to go!!!

Front: Knits, Construction 3 (boned bodice), & Shoe Design.
 Backs!
A few of the other garments.

(I wish I had more of everyone, but these were the only ones there at that time!  I'll try to take more photos tomorrow!)

This is the jury for the Parsons Festival - all graduating AAS seniors can enter.  I saw some amazing garments, so I'm pretty sure I don't have a chance - but, as they say, "you'll never know if you don't try!"

Alex

April 16th, 2011

Dear Gypsy,

I have a theory: the less amount of time I have on a project, the better I do.  Why is that?  Am I more focused?  More productive?  There must be scientific proof of this.  I've been trying to cut back on multi-tasking because the research there shows that we become less productive when we try to do too much at once.  With 9 classes, I can't afford to be less productive, so i set aside specific time for each item.  I think my problem is that I am absolutely terrible (not joking here) at guessing how much time is needed.  Just take a look at my school "To-Do" list (based on when it's due):

Tuesday (woohoo - my birthday!  Okay, that's all the celebration I get.)
- Tailoring: (class is canceled on Tuesday, so that's fantastic and means that I have an extra week to finish the sleeves, plus it means that I can concentrate on Portfolio & Festival)
- Fashion Technical Drawing: ruffled skirt in both AI & hand-drawn, plus 6 flats front & back for Final
- Portfolio: 7 rendered (4th group), Title & End Page, Order B.Cards, & start flats for next week (oh, and if I want to enter and submit by Wednesday, I need to do my entire layout - WOOhhhhh...ugh)

Wednesday:
- Textiles: Post, work on final (knits)
- Portfolio: SUBMIT to Ogawa by noon!
- Construction 3: take-out hem & make perfect, add hand-sewn yo-yos near bust (and beading?) for interest, decide plant pocket placement, bring clutch mock-up and begin purse pattern
- Process & Skills: mini portfolio, business cards

Thursday:
- Merchandising Workshop: min. 30 thumbnails following rules, fabric/graphics boards (start or at least think about)
- Shoe Design: image of shoe (hand-in for final grade), fix sizing? (foam? inserts?), extra leather - make second shoe with just liner pattern - fix sizing first (elastic?)

Friday:
- Knits: Finish final for fit (draft skirt to dress + pockets), up-cycled sweater is DUE!

And repeat.  My looks for Festival are due next week, so at least I have next weekend for that, as I will probably spend today and tomorrow doing my Portfolio Layout, figuring out where to print, and making a muslin draft of my clutch for Construction 3 (third piece) - it needs a lot of beading, so I really need to get started!  I could also make 1 piece to my Knits final, since I patterned the long-sleeve yesterday.  I'm in a go-for-it mood, so that's good!  (Psyched for this head cold to leave me alone though.)

My Mom is in China now - it must be so thrilling since she's never been to Asia!  I'm so excited for her (and for Brettly to see all of our Mom's) - HAVE FUN Y'ALL!

<3 Alex

PS: if you haven't already noticed, I gave-up on P90X two weeks ago.  I have since been skiing, running, biking, and horse-back riding, but I'm sad that I ran out of time.  In three weeks I should be able to start back-up and get my body ready for white-water rafting in the Grand Canyon in September.  Sigh.  Life must go on.  ;)  (The French Toast I made for breakfast was delicious - ahha!)

PPS: I can't stop thinking about Florence...still my favorite city in the world.  I will learn Italian this summer and move there in the next two years with James, Leo, and Tank - what a life we live.

Sephora, Vogue, Brahmin, Under Armour, Parsons - I'm feeling spoiled!

Ciao Nomads!

This Aura Hourglass Sheer Cheek Stain is amazing!  It's so easy to use, subtle but sweet, and I know in the future that I will always just throw it in my bag and go - thanks Sephora & Vogue for helping me look good and save time!  I can't wait to try the new Couture Colour Pequi Oil Hair Treatment I just received too!

Now I'm excited to see what the Brahmin surprise gift is - I'm a HUGE fan!

In other news...Laura and I just finished our first three boards for the Parsons - Under Armour Project.  Wish I could show you all because we are thrilled with what we produced and can't wait to get feedback from UA on Thursday!  You will just have to wait until May 12th when we present!

Happy Monday - here's to getting work DONE!

Yours truly,
Alex

P90X - Day 15 Chest & Back & Ab Ripper X + Day 16 Plyometrics!

Ciao ciao!

I'm in the midst of midterms, so I'll keep this quick.  I was in a creative mood yesterday so I'm doing doubles again today (hey, I'm still in school, give me a break!).  Just finished Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X and it felt GREAT.  Love a good morning workout plus I did the most sets in each that I've ever done, so for the first time making it this far (I'm past the dreaded two week mark!!!) I am a very happy lady.  I've got plyometrics (the "real Day 16") tonight, so wish me luck!

Okay, now to Parsons.

Yours truly,
Alex

P90X - Day 7 - Kenpo X & Day 8 - Chest & Back

Thanks to some dye work for my Parsons classes...
(Obscuring a corner in my 50s pepto bathroom...), I didn't get to Kenpo X yesterday, so guess what?  Today is a Double's Day - ACK!  ;)  Here goes!  (With some company this am...)
I also want to say "THANKS BACK AT YA" to Lucky Magazine for sending this sweet thank you gift from Alex and Ani yesterday:
The card that came with them says "Proudly made in America from Recycled Materials" www.AlexAndAni.com --> they even remembered (or it was by chance) that I go crazy for this stuff!  Thanks Lucky!  I'm happy to do it!  (My PAGE at Lucky.)

Okay, back to Kenpo X Doubles!

Yours truly,
Alex

P90X Day 2 - Plyometrics

In the art of full disclosure (eeeep!  Here goes!)...this is me after this morning's workout (notice how I'm making it as small as possible - it looks much better this way!):
(Please ignore the bedding and ski gear!)  Thankfully, P90X teaches you how to pose to make your body look pretty bada$$, and admittedly I took this after Plyometrics when I'm feeling much more confident.

I am also lucky that with Parsons I get a workout just carrying my stuff to and from school and sometimes even doing homework, depending on what it is, so my upper-body is in "okay" shape.  But my goal is to truly tone my arms so I look strong and ready to take on the world.  However, it's really my legs and glutes that I'm working on.  Continuing at this rate means I'll finish just before graduation in May.  I'm hoping that by walking myself through the process openly on Gypsy Theories will mean that I'll graduate P90X this time.  (Because I have started it twice before and lasted about two weeks each time.  Blah-blah-blah...)  Let's get me over the hump, nomads!

Happy BeachBody!

Yours truly,
Alex

Under Armour & P90X

Yesterday we made our trip down to the Under Armour headquarters in Maryland.  It was unbelievably amazing!  I wish I could tell you all about it, but you know how it goes...it's a wonder we even got to see what we did.  It was so inspiring that I spent the trip back drawing sketches and writing down inspiration research.  It's going to be one heck of a ride.

Even more fantastic is the fact that I was so inspired to get back in shape (I'm so thankful for muscle memory right now).  I started P90X this morning, so this could get interesting.  Ironically, I will finish the program the same week I graduate from Parsons...a w e s o m e.

I've also just redesigned my entire blog and written goals for 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 3 years (I just need to add 5 years and 10 years!).  I have a passion and a mission and I'm going for it.

Remember to ask yourself today: "What did I do better?"  (Thanks Chris Guillebeau!)  Happy Friday!

Yours truly,
Alex

Spring Semester at Parsons has Begun!

Ciao Nomads!

It's my final semester at Parsons (at least as a student) and I've got so many emotions that I kind of don't know what to say!  But I am never without words...

I am already a few hundred dollars in this semester and I've only attended 5 classes...4 more to go!  It's going to be crazy taking 9 but I know I can handle it after the craziness that was last semester.  And at least I don't have a job this semester (well, my freelance work still continues - ha!), which means that I committed myself to an internship for Fashion Week and I am THRILLED to get the chance to work with the Peter Som team.  Not sure if I will just be working Peter Som, just Tommy Hilfiger - womenswear, or both, but I am excited for whatever experience I can get with such a talented team.

Also, anyone know what this "Parsons Festival" is that is changing the format of our finals this semester?  When is the Parsons Graduation in May 2011?

I will leave you with this - which I am sure will be posted on every fashion-loving blog in the neighborhood.  Enjoy:
Bravo Riccardo Tisci, bravo!

Happy Dreams!

Yours truly,
Alex
